WHAT IS AN APOSTILLE?

"Apostille" is a French word meaning certification and is an additional form of authentication of documents that allows them to be recognized internationally by countries who are members of the 1961 Hague Convention treaty. In short, you have a public (recordable) document which needs to be authenticated for use in a foreign country.

WHEN IS AN APOSTILLE NEEDED?

You may need an apostille for work, marriage, adoptions, giving Power of Attorney to someone, establishing a business, and background checks.

Recordable documents as defined by the Texas Secretary of State are birth verification, birth certificates, birth verification letters, death certificates, death verification letters, divorce verification letters, marriage verification letters, marriage licenses, marriage certificates, marriage application forms, Texas divorce decrees, Texas divorce certificates, judgments, TXDPS vehicle title histories, TXDPS criminal history records, and cremation certificates.
